Château Viella - AOP Madiran
The vineyard is located in the center of the Gers in Viella. Since 1952, the Bortolussi family is the owner. Alain, the third generation of winemakers, operates 25 ha (65 acres) of vines in Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic Bilh. The Viella Castle overlooks the vineyard. This impressive structure from the 18th century had been abandoned for more than a century and has just been rebuilt. Nowadays, it serves as a splendid storeroom for oak barrels in its vaulted cellars. The first floor is used for oenotourism events.
The AOP of Madiran lies in 3 departments: Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64), Hautes-Pyrénées (65) and the Gers (32). The vineyard is very old, dating from the Gallo-Roman civilization and it was classified AOP in 1948. Grapes present on the land are mainly Tannat, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It produces deep, powerful and elegant red wines. These grape varieties can also be used to make rosés under the Béarn appellation.
The AOP of Pacherenc du Vic Bilh is situated in the same geographical area as Madiran but is reserved for white wines. They can be dry or sweet. The varietals used are Petit and Gros Manseng, Petit Courbu and Arrufiac. These wines are full-bodied, powerful and seductive.
