DOMAINE DES CHÊNES Dating back to the 18th century, Domaine des Chênes has a firmly established reputation thanks to the Razungles family, who produces an array of renowned wines ranking among the best in the Roussillon. Domaine des Chênes has been owned by the Razungles family for more than 100 years. They have won medals ever since the 1912 Chateauroux wine competition. Convinced by the outstanding potential that the Roussillon offers, the Razungles family - Gilbert, Simone and their son Alain - have skillfully combined instinct, thoroughness and know-how to draw the best from their Vingrau terroirs.
THE DOMAINE (ESTATE): AN OUTSTANDING TERROIR
30 ha of vineyards located on unique types of soil in the foothills of the High Corbières hins, facing the Pyrenées. In the heart of Vingrau's magnificent circle of cliffs, amidst screes scattered with thyme and rosemary, the vines plunge their roots deep into the rocky limestone soil. Low vields, arid and verv stonv soils give high yualiry grapes. Battered by the Tramontane wind, Vingrau's terroirs are moderated by this dry cold wind, ensuring lower temperatures during the day and cooler temperatures at night. Beyond the cliffs, other vineyards lie in the very heart of the garrigue, among almond trees, heather, cistus and holm oaks. Vines grow on poor shallow soils here, on the hillsides. Situated at an altitude of 300m, this terroir has later-ripening conditions than in the valley. Furthermore, the domaine has a high proportion of old vines, which also give the Roussillon wines their typical characteristics. Much care is taken in managing the vineyards and with winemaking techniques, resulting in wines with exquisite balance. Alain Razungles is firmly rooted in tradition: each terroir and each variety are vinified separately and he believes that the soil is essential. When the vinification is over, the wines are matured in cool old ageing cellars. Initially, the domaine was known for its high-qualiry muscats. Now, Domaine des Chênes produces a range of exciting dry white and red wines, in the Tautavel and Côtes du Roussillon Villages appellations. The wines, enjoyed by wine-lovers, are also recognized by the Hachette guide and magazines lihe the Revue des Vins de France, Decanter and the Wine Spectator. |
